Record Number of Companies Honoured for Fulfilling Low-Carbon Commitments
FHKI hosted the "BOCHK Corporate Low Carbon Environmental Leadership Awards 2024" Ceremony and Launched the 2025 Edition
Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI) with the full support of Bank of China (Hong Kong) (BOCHK), today (19 August) held the Awards Ceremony for the “BOCHK Corporate Low-Carbon Environmental Leadership Awards 2024” and launched the 2025 edition. The ceremony was honoured by the presence of Kenneth Cheng, Deputy Director of Environmental Protection, as the Guest-of-Honour, and was a major event attracting over 500 guests.
Launched in 2015, the Awards, organised by FHKI and sponsored by BOCHK, aims to encourage companies in the manufacturing, services, and property management sectors in Hong Kong and the Pan-Pearl River Delta region to implement environmental protection measures and reduce pollution. The 2024 Awards saw a record-breaking number of over 960 participating enterprises, including 406 first-time entrants. Collectively, the participants completed over 2,300 green projects, saving over 500 million kWh of electricity consumption, equivalent to over 150,000 Hong Kong households’ annual consumption. They also reduced water usage by over 11 million cubic meters, comparable to that of more than 4,400 Olympic-sized swimming pools; achieved a reduction in waste disposal by over 3.32 million tonnes, which is the weight of nearly 612,000 African elephants, and recycled more than 240,000 tonnes of materials, equivalent to the net weight of 16,400 double-decker buses (see Appendix 1 for details).
The 2024 programme features 21 awards. In addition to the existing Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards for Manufacturing, Services, and Property Management, new Gold, Silver, and Bronze SME Awards have been introduced for SMEs in these three sectors, respectively, to encourage their active participation in environmental protection. Other awards include the “Belt and Road Environmental Leadership Recognition Award”, “Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macao Greater Bay Area Environmental Leadership Recognition Award”, and “Outstanding Sustainability Corporate Award 10+” (see Appendix 2 for the list of winners).
FHKI Chairman Anthony Lam expressed his gratitude to BOCHK for sponsoring the Awards for ten consecutive years, and thanked all sectors for their generous support of the Awards over the years. He stated that FHKI supports the development of a green economy in Hong Kong. Since launching the "One Factory, One Environmental Project" initiative in 2005, it has now entered its 20th year. He hopes to encourage businesses, especially SMEs, to seize the opportunities presented by the green and low-carbon transition through the Awards. “The adoption of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles is now a major trend among businesses, and the benefits are widely recognised. As a key part of ESG, carbon reduction is something FHKI encourages the business community to integrate into long-term development strategies. This will enhance industry resilience, innovation, and competitiveness, helping to realise Hong Kong’s vision of a green and sustainable financial ecosystem,” Chairman Lam stated.
During his speech, Deputy Director of Environmental Protection Kenneth Cheng stated, "I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Federation of Hong Kong Industries and Bank of China (Hong Kong) for their years of dedication to encouraging and promoting the green and low-carbon transformation among enterprises in Hong Kong and the Pan-Pearl River Delta region. In the 2024 awards, a record-breaking number of over 960 enterprises submitted applications. This reflects a growing trend of companies responding to the call, striving to become pioneers in corporate environmental stewardship, and collectively contributing to the mitigation of climate change and the protection of the environment."
Wang Huabin, Deputy Chief Executive of BOCHK, said, “The National 14th Five-Year Plan clearly defines the goals of carbon emissions peaking and carbon neutrality, providing clear guidance for green transformation. Hong Kong has actively embraced these goals and is dedicated to becoming Asia's leading green finance hub. This year marks the tenth anniversary of BOCHK and FHKI jointly organising the 'BOCHK Corporate Low Carbon and Environmental Leadership Awards'. By keeping abreast of market trends, we have been incorporating innovative elements into the programme as well as driving green and low-carbon transformation across industries with forward-looking visions. In 2024, nearly 1,000 companies participated in the award, setting a new record that underscores its widespread influence."
Jude Chow, Executive Deputy Chairman of FHKI and Co-Chairman of the 2024 Awards Judging Panel, emphasised that with the growing global focus on sustainable development, businesses must take the lead in driving carbon reduction and implementing environmental reforms within their operations. He stated, “Addressing climate change is a long-term undertaking that requires the participation of the entire business sector. SMEs are the cornerstone of Hong Kong’s economy, which is why we established new awards this year specifically to recognise their significant contributions to sustainable development. By sharing their success stories, we aim to drive the green transformation of the entire industry.”
FHKI congratulates all winning companies and thanks all participants for their active involvement in the “BOCHK Corporate Low Carbon Environmental Leadership Awards”. The 2025 Awards are now open for entries, and we warmly invite all sectors to take part and contribute to environmental protection and carbon reduction.
